What to Do If Your Move Is Delayed: Backup Plans and Advice
June 1, 2025
Moving day doesn’t always go as planned. Trucks get stuck. Schedules change. Maybe your new place isn’t ready.
It happens. Here’s what to do if your move gets delayed — and how to stay ready.
1. Ask What Happened
Start by asking your moving company why the delay happened.
- Is the truck stuck in traffic?
- Did another job run long?
- Was there a mix-up with the schedule?
Once you know, you can figure out the next step.
2. Check Your Contract
Some delays are covered in the agreement you signed.
Look for things like:
- Cancellation/rescheduling rules
- Extra fees for overnight storage or late delivery
- Who pays for delays
If you’re unsure, call the company and ask them to explain.
3. Have a Backup Place to Stay
If you’re stuck between homes, you’ll need a place to sleep.
Options to consider:
- Stay with family or friends
- Book a local hotel (look in San Mateo, Redwood City, or Palo Alto)
- Short-term rentals on Airbnb or Vrbo
If you’re moving with pets, check that your backup plan is pet-friendly.
4. Keep a “Moving Day Survival Kit” With You
Always pack a small bag or box with essentials. In case your stuff is delayed, you’ll have what you need.
Include a moving checklist:
- Clothes for 2–3 days
- Toiletries
- Chargers
- Snacks and water
- Medications
- Important documents
- Kids’ items or pet food if needed
5. Ask About Storage
If the movers can’t deliver on time, ask if they offer short-term storage. Many Bay Area movers (including us) can hold your items until delivery is possible.
This keeps your things safe while you sort out next steps.
6. Call Utility Companies if Needed
If your move-in date changes, let the utility companies know.
Update:
- Internet and cable
- PG&E (gas/electric)
- Water and trash
- USPS address change
This helps avoid paying for a home you haven’t moved into yet.
7. Stay in Touch With Your Movers
Don’t wait for updates — call or text your moving coordinator.
Good movers should keep you in the loop, but it’s okay to check in.
Ask:
- When can you expect the truck?
- Who should you contact for updates?
- Will your things arrive the same day or the next?
8. Don’t Panic
Delays are frustrating. But most are fixable.
Stay calm, keep your essentials close, and ask your movers for help with the new plan.
If you hired the right team, they’ll work with you to make things right.
